The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of China's most significant traditional holidays. Celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, it honors the ancient poet and statesman Qu Yuan (340–278 BC), who drowned himself in the Miluo River out of despair for his country.
To commemorate his sacrifice, local people rowed boats in search of his body and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from consuming it. These acts evolved into today's iconic traditions: dragon boat racing and making zongzi — sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves.
The festival also carries deep cultural significance as a time to ward off evil spirits and disease. Families hang mugwort and calamus leaves on their doors, drink realgar wine, and wear fragrant sachets to promote health and protection.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is a vibrant celebration of Chinese heritage, bringing together communities through sport, food, and time-honored customs.
